Parents, Researchers, and Politicians
Parents
Lyn Redwood, Atlanta, GA
Lyn, R.N., M.S.N., CRNP is a Nurse Practitioner and is co-founder of the Coalition for SafeMinds. She has worked in the nursing profession for 25 years specializing in pediatrics and women's health care. She holds a B.S. in Nursing, an MA in Community Health Nursing and is an ANA certified Family Nurse Practitioner. In the late 1990's she became involved in autism research when her son Will was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified and found to be mercury toxic. Lyn is co-author of Autism: A Novel Form of Mercury Poisoning and has testified before the Government Reform Committee on “Mercury in Medicine: Are We Taking Unnecessary Risks?” As a writer and researcher on autism and mercury toxicity, Lyn has been published in Neurotoxicology, Medical Hypothesis, Molecular Psychiatry, Mothering Magazine, and Autism-Aspergers Digest. She has also appeared on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer and has been interviewed by U.S. News and World Report, People, Wired and numerous other publications. Lyn has been a speaker at national autism conferences. Will is 10 years old.Liz Birt, Wilmette, IL, (Chicago)
Liz began researching the role of vaccines and autism in 1998 shortly after Dr. Andrew Wakefield's first article was published in the Lancet. Liz started Medical Interventions for Autism, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to finding the possible link between inflammatory bowel disease, immune system disorders, viruses from vaccines and autism in 1999 shortly after her son, Matthew was treated at the Royal Free Hospital by Dr. Wakefield's colleagues. In 2000 she helped found the advocacy group SafeMinds and as General Counsel obtained various important documents relating to the CDC's knowledge of the dangers of Thimerosal. In 2001 she "retired" from the private practice of law to become a full time employee of the Committee on Government Reform under the Chairmanship of Rep. Dan Burton R-Ind. Liz's main function was to review thousands of pages of government and industry records, conduct interviews of key FDA and CDC employees and to write a report on this issue to Congress. She accomplished this in May of 2002 when the Committee's staff report was released to Congress and the public, entitled "Mercury in Medicine-Taking Unnecessary Risks." Liz is currently in private law practice in Chicago and continues to be an advocate for vaccine-damaged children. Liz has been a speaker at national autism conferences. She is mother to a 9 year old, Matthew.Sallie Bernard, Aspen, CO & New Jersey
Sallie is a Co-Founder and Executive Director of SafeMinds. She is principal author of Autism: A Novel Form of Mercury Poisoning and has testified before the US House Government Reform Committee. She is President of her own company founded in 1986, ARC Research, Chair of the Board of Cure Autism Now, the largest private funder of biomedical research on autism, and Executive Director of the New Jersey Cure Autism. She has published a number of research papers and participates in several CDC committees addressing the effect of Thimerosal on neurodevelopment. Sallie is parent to Bill, 16, diagnosed with autism. Sallie has been a speaker at numerous national autism conferences.Mark Blaxill, Boston, MA
Father to Michaela, 9 years old, diagnosed with autism, Mark is Senior Vice President of a major worldwide consulting firm located in Boston; has a Harvard MBA where he graduated with distinction, is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Princeton University where he received an AB Summa Cum Laude from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Mark serves as a board member for SafeMinds and has been instrumental in analyzing the CDC statistical reports concerning the links of Vaccine and autism. He has authored and published many articles on autism and has spoken with many TV affiliates, newspapers and magazines about the link between Thimerosal and autism. He just completed a comprehensive report on the epidemiology of autism spectrum disorders, which is in press. Mark has been a speaker at numerous national autism conferences.Rick Rollens, Sacramento, CA
After Rick’s son Russell, now 14, regressed into autism, he found that the level of autism research and clinical and educational services for children with autism left much to be desired. He, along with three other fathers of autistic children founded the MIND (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders) Institute at the University of California-Davis Medical Center in 1998. MIND is dedicated to finding the causes of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders and developing effective treatments and cures. In little more than two years, the MIND Institute raised over $40 million, making it the largest autism research institute in the world. Fortunately for the autism community, the MIND Institute has sustained this level of funding. It was the first independent research institute to solicit research proposals on the role of vaccines in the development of autism. For the first time in history, millions of dollars are being used to fund independent science, free of the influence of the "vaccinate at all costs" public health community and vaccine manufacturers, into the relationship of vaccines and autism. The institute has also published an epidemiological study into the factors underlying California's 502 percent increase in autism over the past 13 years. Rick has been a speaker at national autism conferences.Laura & Scott Bono, Durham, NC
Laura serves as Chair of the Board of the National Autism Association and Scott is a board member. They are parents to 15 year old Jackson, diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, not otherwise specified and heavy metal toxicity.Laura and Scott has been actively advocating on behalf of autistic children and families since the early 1990s at the local, state and national levels. Both helped organize the OSC investigation. Scott has testified before the US Congress about vaccines and their link to autism, spoken at universities and local service organizations to increase awareness of the need for biomedical research, therapies, and improved educational opportunities for those with autism. He has spoken at National Autism Conferences about the toll that an autistic child takes on the family, the financial future of the family and the impact on the community, and the importance of grassroots advocacy. Laura focuses on helpful biomedical interventions and lobbies the government to seek the cause, treatments, and a cure for autism including planning press conferences and rallies to focus the media on the autism-vaccine link. Along with SafeMinds, the Bonos and others with the National Autism Association are working with members of Congress to increase NIH funding for autism/Thimerosal research and compel HHS to allow families to seek and receive compensation for their mercury poisoned children in the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. The Bonos have been interviewed by numerous magazines and newspapers, appeared on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and The Today Show, and provided background research to NBC Dateline and independent documentaries.
Jo Pike, Marion, SC
Jo Pike is President of the National Autism Association and before that, the founder of Moms on a Mission for Autism. Jo has a strong management background and has been advocating for children at local, state, and national levels through media and legislation for many years. She serves on the School Improvement Council in her local area and has been a speaker at local and national autism conferences. She has helped coordinate several rallies and press conferences involving parents and legislators. She helped organize the OSC investigation. It is her goal to see that all families and individuals with autism have access to the services and biomedical care that they need to live life to their fullest potential. Jo’s 7 year old son, Hunter, is diagnosed with autism and heavy metal toxicity.Kelli Ann Davis, Fayetteville, NC
Kelli lobbies at the state and national levels. Her son, Miles, 13, was diagnosed with autism at an early age. She came to the autism movement after discovering that her child was mercury poisoned by his vaccines in 2002. She has worked alongside other NC parents to get the state’s Attorney General to sue pharmaceutical companies for the damages they have committed against their children. She helped organize the OSC investigation. She has fought to keep mercury on the agenda of her Congressmen and Senators and is a co-founder of recently formed CoMed with the purpose of removing all mercury from drugs.Lori McIlwain, Cary, NC (Raleigh)
Lori is a Board Member of the National Autism Association. Lori began her career in radio and television and has focused primarily on conceptual development, commercial copywriting, and media strategies on the agency side. She has an extensive and diverse background in advertising, marketing, public relations, and consumer behavior working with national, regional and local accounts. Lori has lobbied Congress for more NIH funding and for the rights of vaccine injured children to seek justice for their injuries. She has spearheaded many fundraisers for NAA and other autism organizations and organized rallies in DC to get the attention of the media. She helped organize the OSC investigation. Her fight as an autism advocate began right after her only son, Connor, was diagnosed with autism. Her husband Christian is also very pro-active in the autism fight and is committed to finding a cure. Connor is 5 years old. Lori has been a speaker at national autism conferences.Bobbie Manning, East Amherst, NY
Bobbie has been instrumental in many projects in the autism movement. She is active at the national and state levels lobbying her state Attorney General, US Congress, and providing a guiding educational hand with the media. She is a co-founder of recently formed CoMed, having the primary purpose of banning all mercury in drugs. She helped organize the OSC investigation. She is mother to Mike, 10, diagnosed with autism and mercury toxicity.J.B. Handley, San Francisco, CA
J.B. Handley is Managing Director of Swander Pace Capital, a San Francisco investment firm, and has a young son with autism. Handley’s son began transdermal DMPS chelation therapy in 2004, shortly after his diagnosis, and now he claims that the boy is beginning to talk and behave like any normal 26-month-old would. Handley, who has spoken to dozens of parents with the same remarkable success stories to share, is as good as convinced. He says that transdermal DMPS is a significantly better way to deliver the agent because it bypasses the gut, which presented major issues for kids with chronically bad guts. "It's better than an IV drip – how do you give that to a kid? – and it is gentle enough to use every other day," he says.Lisa Sykes, Richmond, VA
Lisa is a practicing ordained minister and mother to Wesley, 6, diagnosed with autism and mercury toxicity. Lisa has been an active lobbyist to the FDA, CDC and other government organizations to ban mercury from all drugs and for accountability to those who perpetuate the problem. She helped organize the OSC investigation. Recently, she co-founded CoMed, for that purpose.Nancy Hokkanen, Minneapolis, MN
Nancy has lobbied her Attorney General in Minnesota to sue pharmaceutical companies for damage to the children in Minnesota (similar to tobacco lawsuits). She was instrumental in organizing the parents who led the charges in the other states of NC, SC, KS, IA, NY, WA, VA, WI and MO. She helped organize the OSC investigation. Nancy is mother to Andrew, diagnosed with autism, ADD, and mercury toxicity.Lujene Clark, Carthage, MO
Lujene majored in business administration and minored in accounting. She also completed training as a CMA. She launched her career in medicine as an office manager and nurse in family practice and OB-GYN. She served as vice President of Southeast Medical Resources in the 80's. She became active in MO local politics and served two terms on her local city council. She earned a reputation of holding the government accountable for its fiscal policies. As a mother of a child born in the mid-90s and damaged by mercury in vaccines, Lujene has become a vanguard for the establishment of safe vaccines, making numerous trips to state and national legislative bodies to help educate policymakers on the danger of mercury as a vaccine preservative.Dr. Alan Clark, Carthage, MO
Alan received his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia 1974. Presently he serves as the Medical Director, Carthage Community Clinic. Like Lujene, Alan became an advocate for the anti-mercury movement when his son, Devon, was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a high functioning form of autism in 2003 after a round of flu shots. Alan is a member of SafeMinds and on the scientific advisory board of the National Autism Association. Alan and Lujene began www.NoMercury.org in January 2004 as a way to disseminate information surrounding the use of Thimerosal. They have lobbied at the state and national level for anti-mercury laws.Kelly Kerns, Kansas City, KS
Kelly is an advocate for autism issues both at the state and national levels. She is mom to twins plus a third child diagnosed with autism. Kaylee, Andrew and Daniel.Robert J. Krakow, New York, NY
Bob is a lawyer in NYC and a former prosecutor concentrating in the trial of civil
and criminal cases. Bob came to know about autism personally when his son, Alex, age 5, was diagnosed with autism. If the CDC had published their studies on the toxic effects of Thimerosal causing neurodevelopmental disorders in children and recalled the toxic poison from doctor’s shelves, his son (born in November 1999) would not have received a Thimerosal-containing vaccine. Bob realizes his son is just one of thousands of children that could have prevented their fate had the government been forthright with the public. Bob helps to advocate on the local, state and national level for government accountability, the ability for children to get their civil rights concerning their vaccine injuries, and for the abolishment of mercury in all drugs.

He is director of the Autism Research Institute, editor of the Autism Research Review International, a founder of the Autism Society of America and serves on the Biomedical Advisory Board of the National Autism Association. His book Infantile Autism: The Syndrome and Its Implications for a Neural Theory of Behavior is credited with dramatically altering the field of psychiatry with the recognition that autism is a biological disorder, not an emotional illness. Dr. Rimland served as the chief technical advisor for the Academy-award winning film Rainman. His son was diagnosed in the early 60’s with autism.
Politicians
Congressman Dan Burton, (R-IN)
Congressman Dan Burton is serving his eleventh term as a Republican U.S. Congressman from Indiana’s Sixth Congressional District. Immediate past chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, he currently is chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights and Wellness of that committee as well as a member of the House International Relations Committee, where he serves on the subcommittees on the Western Hemisphere and International Operations and Human Rights. He has a career voting percentage record that is one of the highest in Congress. As Chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, he was the architect of the 1997 FDA Modernization Act. During the 105th and 106th Congress, he held a series of hearings on vaccine safety and informed consent issues ranging from anthrax vaccine and Gulf War syndrome to childhood vaccinations and autism; problems with implementation of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act; conflicts of interest in vaccine licensing and policymaking; and mercury in vaccines. The father of three children, he has two grandchildren. Both of his grandchildren suffered severe vaccine reactions. His granddaughter almost died as an infant following a hepatitis B vaccination and his healthy, bright grandson suddenly became autistic at age 14 months after being injected with nine different vaccines on the same day.
Congressman Dave Weldon, (R-FL)
Congressman Dave Weldon, M.D. of Melbourne, Florida, is an Army veteran and physician who was elected to his first political office in November 1994 to serve the people of Florida's 15th Congressional District. Dr. Weldon is the first medical doctor to be elected from the State of Florida and is the first Republican physician and only the second physician ever to serve on the prestigious House Appropriations Committee. He is also the first representative from East-Central Florida to be appointed to the Appropriations Committee. Rep Weldon's subcommittee assignments include: VA/HUD and Independent Agencies which oversees NASA's funding; Labor, Health and Human Services and Education; and the District of Columbia. In previous years, Rep. Weldon served on the House Science Committee, the House Banking Committee, and the Government Reform Committee. Rep. Weldon also served as a member of the Committee on Education and Workforce during the 104th Congress. Dr. Weldon has been a speaker before the IOM, HHS and many autism conferences concerning vaccines and their link to neurodevelopmental disorders. He was instrumental in getting two independent researchers access to the CDC Vaccine Safety Datalink, a database previously housed at the CDC that contains information on millions of doses of vaccines over a 15 year period in the United States. What Dr. Weldon learned from that experience and the research that came from that access has led him to become a strong advocate for the rights of autistic children to learn the truth between the link of vaccines and neurodevelopmental disorders. In April 2004, he introduced the bipartisan bill, HR 4169, “The Mercury Ban Bill” in Congress.Carolyn Maloney (D-NY)
In April 2004, she introduced the bipartisan bill, HR 4169, “The Mercury Ban Bill” in Congress along with colleague Congressman Dave Weldon.Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
Senator Leahy has supported numerous autism causes most notably speaking at the rally in January 2003 to repeal the Eli Lilly Protection Provisions from the Homeland Security Bill. He was instrumental in educating his colleagues on why the provisions were bad for the vaccine injured children and therefore helped get the provisions repealed.Assemblywoman Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills, CA)
Fran Pavley, is a CA State Assembly member and the mother of a 26 year old autistic son. She understands how devastating the disease can be. Imagine watching in horror as an epidemic of children succumbed to the same fate. Upon learning the suspected link between mercury and neurodevelopmental disorders, Congressman Pavley introduced the AB2943 bill to restrict the mercury content in vaccines for pregnant women and babies in the state of CA that was just recently signed into CA law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The law handed a victory to parent activists across the country who have blamed mercury for a surge in autism and other neurological disorders in children. The bill will prevent expectant mothers and children younger than 3 from getting immunizations with more than trace levels of Thimerosal - a preservative used in some vaccines that is about half ethyl mercury - a compound known to damage the nervous system. The restriction will take effect in July 2006.Sen. Debbie Stabenow, (D-MI)
Sen. Stabenow has been very helpful to the autism community. She helped get the Homeland Security Provisions repealed and has sent science staff members to the IOM meetings to listen to the proceedings. She spoke at a rally to repeal the provisions, even after her home suffered a severe fire that very morning.
